DRIVING TIPS FOR YOUR SUBARU
4WD
Generally, driving
technique for your 4WD does not differ much from that of an
ordinary vehicle.
Subaru 4WD vehicle's are designed primarily as a front wheel
drive vehicle which can be converted to four wheel drive.
You can change from front to four wheel drive and vice versa
without stopping the vehicle.
Keep in mind the following when driving your 4WD.
Four wheel drive makes full use of engine braking power on all
four wheels.
Since both front and rear wheels are connected by propeller
shafts, it never happens that braking power is applied only to
the front or the rear wheels. This ensures safer stopping in
shorter distances than in front wheel drive (FWD).
Four wheel drive is recommended especially on roads that are made
slippery by snow or ice. Not much difference is noticed, however,
in the case of extremely sharp turns or sudden braking.
When driving down a slope or turning corners, therefore, lower
the speed and always ensure ample distance away from other
vehicle's.
A 4WD vehicle may enable you to traverse otherwise impossible
areas covered with ice, snow or mud and slush, or sand or dirt.
However, it is still designed to operate as an all road vehicle,
and not as an all terrain vehicle.
Four wheel drive with four tyres of extremely different size (use
of tyres other than specified, must be the same type of Tyre inn
the front and rear) this may cause delay or a slight jolt to the
vehicle body when changing back to front wheel drive even when
running straight ahead and increased fuel consumption. Gear train
wear may also be caused.
Regularly check Tyre inflation pressure.
When replacing your tyres, please make sure that you replace the
tyres with either the same type or the same size. NEVER USE TYRES
OF DIFFERENT SIZES.
When the vehicle is operated frequently on steep hills or dusty
roads, or in other hard driving conditions, the engine oil, brake
fluid and transmission oil should be replaced more frequently
than in the schedule specified in the Owner's Manual.
For 4WD vehicles with manual transmissions. Do not shift the
drive selector when the steering wheel is turned. If you feel
that your vehicle is braked when turning sharp corners on dry
pavement in four wheel drive, drive your vehicle in front wheel
drive.
When changing the drive selector from '4WD HI' to '4WD LO' or
vice versa, fully press the clutch pedal in the same way as
shifting gear.
CAUTION:
When shifting into 4WD LO, slow vehicle down to 30 km/h (20mph)
or less to prevent damage to the drive train.
AUSTRALIAN FOUR-WHEEL DRIVING INFORMATION FOR THE OPERATION OF
YOUR SUBARU 4WD
Drive Selector (4WD Duel Range Model)
FWD: In this position front wheel drive is engaged.
4WD HI: In this position four wheel drive is engaged for added
traction.
4WD LO: Use this position while four wheel drive is engaged on
steep grades or snow covered roads to improve climbing power.
The drive selector can be shifted while driving regardless of the
position of the gear shift lever.
It is necessary to press the clutch pedal to change the drive
selector from 'FWD' to '4WD HI' or vice versa. Changing the drive
selector from 'FWD" to '4WD HI' or vice versa is possible
only with the steering wheel in the straight forward position.
With the steering wheel turned while driving, changing from '4WD
HI' to 'FWD' may be difficult due to slight additional load on
the rear drive gears. Never force the drive selector to shift.
When the steering wheel returns to the straightforward position,
the selector lever will shift easily.
It is necessary to press the clutch pedal to change the drive
selector from '4WD HI' to '4WD LO' or vice versa. Changing the
drive selector from '4WD HI' to '4WD LO' or vice versa is
possible while the steering wheel is turned.
The drive selector has a neutral position between '4WD HI' and
'4WD LO'. When changing the drive selector from '4WD HI' to '4WD
LO' or vice versa, shift the selector firmly.
CAUTION:
Never shift the drive selector while the wheels are spinning or
slipping
Never rev up the engine with the drive selector in neutral
position between '4WD HI' and '4WD LO'.
Do not shift into the '4WD LO' range without first pressing the
clutch pedal and reducing the vehicle's speed to 30 km/h or less.
